Practice Areas

Browse our firm’s specific practice areas below:

What type of Restraining Order do I need?
The type of restraining order that you need depends on the relationship between you and the person you are asking for a restraining order against:
  • If you need a restraining order against 1) a current or former spouse, dating partner, or roommate, 2) your child’s parent, or 3) a close relative (specifically, your childgrandchild, sibling, parent, or grandparent), you will need a Domestic Violence Restraining Order.
  • If need a restraining order against some other person that is not listed above (e.g., a friend, other relative, coworker, classmate, dormmate, or stranger), you will need a Civil Harassment Restraining Order.
Someone is asking for a restraining order against me. Can you help me?

Yes…if they are seeking a Domestic Violence Restraining Order (Family Court) or a Civil Harassment Restraining Order (Civil Court). Our firm represents both those seeking and those defending against these types of restraining orders.

Can I ask for a restraining order on behalf of my minor child?

Generally, yes for both Domestic Violence Restraining Orders and Civil Harassment Restraining Orders. But before you can do so, the court must appoint you as your child’s Guardian Ad Litem (“GAL”).  If your child is under age 12, your child must have a GAL to get a restraining order.  If your child is age 12 or older, a GAL is not required–your child can ask for a restraining order on their own.  If you are seeking a restraining order yourself, you can also ask the court to protect your child under your restraining order in certain circumstances.

"...My only regret is that you didn't come on the case from day one."

Kevin put a stop to the 7 years of bleeding caused by a vindictive ex- Don’t let Kevin’s youthful looks deceive you; this man has more legal strategy, integrity, expertise, and overall top-notch representation than my first two allegedly seasoned “family law specialist” attorneys COMBINED. My case dragged on over 7 years as my vindictive ex-spouse wanted nothing more than to erase a loving father from his children and to maximize child support in retaliation for filing for divorce against her. Even the simplest issues required going in front of the judge as she had no incentive to settle anything – she simply dragged everything out then asked for attorneys fees, effectively causing me to pay for both my lawyer and hers. My previous attorneys (as well as opposing counsel) simply churned fees and extracted as much as they could from me, causing me tremendous stress and near financial ruin. It’s not hyperbole when I say Kevin saved me and my children. I have 50/50 custody now and his diligence, expertise, and attention to detail forced the opposing’s hand and ultimately they folded at the 11th hour and decided to settle rather than risk going in front of the judge. Again, opposing had NEVER settled in the 7 years prior to Kevin taking the case. This should tell you quite a bit as to Kevin’s legal acumen.
Thanks, Kevin from a grateful dad. My only regret is that you didn’t come on the case from day one.

- Johnny L.

"Not Taking Sh** From Anyone"

Not Taking Sh** From Anyone- I had a multiple issue case. Kevin and his team handled it all. A true professional in the court room. What really impressed me the most was how he dealt with me. His explanations, suggestions and a touch of reality when needed, were down to earth and understandable without being demeaning. A very easy person to talk to. Any Lawyer can speak to a Judge with the right terminology but, to be able to find one that can honestly make you feel secure that your case is being handled competently and then walk into court and prove it, is amazing. I hope you never need to call an attorney, but if you do, this is the guy without a doubt.

- Laura T.

"Helped me through difficult times and led to successful outcomes!"

I was referred to Kevin by a close friend of mine, and I am beyond grateful that such a referral was made. I was facing a difficult situation and case with a co-parent who was not cooperating at all and was even willing to lie just to be spiteful and use our child as a way to get revenge. All that to say, Kevin remained patient and attentive throughout the last couple years of me needing his services on and off and has always been there, not only to get the work done and win in the court room, but also to listen, especially whenever I just needed to let out all of my concerns, fears, and stress I was enduring. I cannot say more positive things and am confident he is best lawyer to go to for any family law needs! Despite the obstacles in the way at the onset of the case and the worst of false allegations, Kevin was able to pushed passed all of them, take my paternity case all the way to a judge, and I won immediate visitation and joint physical/legal custody. I couldn’t have asked for more.

- Brandon H.

"...I'm so happy I retained Brown Law & Mediation!..."

Attorney Brown came highly recommended and I’m so happy I retained Brown Law & Mediation! Kevin and his team guided me through the legal process with care and compassion knowing that I wanted the best for my two young daughters. He was very strategic and tactical with the other party and their legal team and frankly made them look bad! He advised me in a very transparent way and made sure I understood all possible courses of action and outcomes. The way he handled all aspects of the case lifted the stress off my shoulders COMPLETELY. I really appreciated that he kept costs/fees down wherever he could compared to previous legal team I hired. He negotiated a phenomenal deal on my child support, custody, and visitation case. I was so pleased with the service and outcome that I retained his firm for my estate planning as well. Thank you Kevin and BLM team!

- Terra E.

"...Kevin is our go to referral for all things Family Law and Mediation"

Kevin is not only an amazing attorney but a stellar person. Given the delicate nature of his business he’ll take you step by step through the process with transparent, caring and real advice. He’ll execute at a high level and go the distance for his client’s. That’s why Kevin is our go to referral for all things Family Law and Mediation.

- Brian G.

"Kevin Brown is my hero!...He was definitely the best lawyer I've ever had! Highly recommend!"

Kevin Brown is my hero! Basically, in less than a year, Mister Brown brought to an end, a 19 year bitter divorce battle that three of my previous attorneys took loads of money from me and basically did nothing to help my cause. Mr. Brown was always very professional, very informative and took over my case as if I was a family member of his. He answered all my calls and solved problems as they arose very efficiently and was present for all court hearings. I would definitely recommend him to family and friends if they ever needed counseling. He was definitely the best lawyer I’ve ever had! Highly recommend!

- George A.

"...I couldn’t be happier! Go with Kevin, he truly is the best!"

I found Kevin after interviewing numerous family attorneys and knew he was the one and trustworthy. He even found things in all the paperwork I’d prepared that none of the other attorneys found. He helped me keep my sanity intact while guiding me through my ex’s avoidance. Thankfully he got us settled and I couldn’t be happier! Go with Kevin, he truly is the best!

"...Kevin got me the resolution I wanted at a very reasonable cost..."

I recently reached out to Kevin Brown to handle a delicate issue with my ex-wife.  His swift actions and guidance allowed me to avoid a lengthy and costly court process.  Kevin got me the resolution I wanted at a very reasonable cost and without opening the door for anymore demands from my ex-wife.  I am very grateful to him for his expertise.  Kevin is a great attorney who will always favor resolutions with the opposite party outside of the court room.
